Lillim

History
Named after the first of the station’s doctors to map the new genetic sequence of the infected, Dr. Lilliam’s Virus, often colloquialized as Lillim, is considered an affliction rather than a recognised race under intergalactic standards. Entirely unseen before the events of CE 323, the virus induces a profound change in the genetic structure of any organic races it comes into contact with. Over the course of a week’s time, those infected develop a high fever, followed by the discoloration and hardening of their skin, an overproduction of keratin elongating the nails, and finally the protrusion of symmetrical, segmented horn-like appendages on one or more locations on the skull. Attempts to treat or reverse the affliction have been unsuccessful.
While the exact cause and transmission remain unknown, dump files in the memory banks of Androids suggest a potential electromagnetic transmission. Lilliam’s Virus affected roughly one in ten organic astrosapients, indiscriminately targeting them. Since the first wave, new cases have been rare. After an initial quarantine, and after worsening conditions on the stations as a result of their absence, the Lillim were reinstated by their respective factions. Though extensive psychological evaluations have demonstrated no irregularities, the spontaneous change and a correlation to the unidentified ship have caused an inevitable amount of friction between those who were and those who weren’t infected by the virus.
Society and Culture
In the wake of the enigmatic Dr. Lilliam's Virus, those affected, colloquially known as the Lillim, have forged a unique and resilient pseudo-culture that revolves around embracing their transformation. Although initially viewed as an affliction, the Lillim have come to redefine their existence, turning what was once a crisis into a source of unity and strength. The most distinctive aspect of the Lillim is the physical transformation brought about by the virus. The discoloration, hardened skin, elongated nails, and symmetrical, segmented horn-like appendages serve as visible markers of one's connection to the Lilliam's Virus. Rather than hiding these changes, some Lillim proudly display them, considering them symbols of resilience and adaptability.
Living with the effects of Lilliam's Virus has fostered a strong sense of community among the Lillim. They have formed support networks that provide emotional and practical assistance to those who experienced the transformation. Whether it's sharing tips on managing physical changes or offering a listening ear during moments of insecurity, the Lillim community stands united.
Despite their resilience, the Lillim face challenges in integrating fully back into their societies. Prejudice and misconceptions persist, particularly from those who were not affected by the virus. Lillim now tirelessly work towards dispelling myths, fostering understanding, and promoting equality. They emphasize that the virus did not alter their fundamental nature.
