Getting Started

From Astrophobia Wiki
Welcome to Astrophobia! You're well on your way to joining our community. For the best possible experience, we've laid out four key steps to getting started on our server. This page includes the 'need-to-know' information about lore and setting, has tips for starting traits, and has helpful links for getting settled in once your whitelist is approved.

Step 1: Join the Discord and Review the Rules

The first step is to join the Astrophobia Discord server.

Once you've joined, you should review the rules in #player-guidelines and texture pack information in #resources. While the server modpack is entirely optional, we strongly recommend MorePlayerModels to enhance the experience: most people on the server use it!

Step 2: Develop your Character

Your character will be used in your whitelist application to join Astrophobia. Please note however that you are not locked in to this character! If after being approved, you decide you wish to go ahead with a different character, that's fine - just so long as it still follows the lore. If you're not sure if a new character design fits into lore, please contact a @Helper on the discord!

Learn the Basic Lore

Main article: CE 323

Astrophobia takes place in the Llyr system in the Thaurin Galaxy, a galaxy unlike our own. Home to a desert planet chosen for terraforming, Llyr was originally home to both the Llyr Galactic Penitentiary (LGP), housing prisoners who volunteered to support the terraforming efforts, and the Belenos Research Station, a station run by a private corporation — Star Guard Solutions (SGS) —which housed scientists and the security personnel stationed on the LGP, also run by the SGS.

Shortly before the current day, the Llyr system became cut off from the rest of the galaxy due to an error with its Laser Link Communications Array. Redirecting resources away from the prison to sustain Belenos staff now trapped in Llyr, the prisoners were kept in the dark of what happened, eventually leading to a full-scale riot. The prisoners took control of the LGP and declared themselves to be the Free People's Union, renaming the former prison to the Freestar.

In the midst of all this, the BSMC Zaranitsa — a ship belonging to the Black Star Confederacy — warped into the system, fleeting an unknown Xeno ship. Ejecting their warp core to disable the pursuing craft, they now found themselves trapped in Llyr, along with everyone else.

Build Your Character

Your character must be aligned with one of the three main factions in the Llyr system: the Free People's Union (FPU), Star Guard Solutions (SGS), or the Black Star Confederacy (BSC).

Each of the three factions have cryopod reserves from which your character will thaw. Perhaps they were a prisoner, waking up to find their life behind bars is no more thanks to the FPU; perhaps they were a scientist, planning to aid with terraforming efforts on the Belenos; or maybe they were a battle-hardened soldier waiting to be called up to service on the Zaranitsa. You do not need to know every detail of your character's life at this stage, but need to know the following information:

1. What is their name?
This can be anything! Some factions / origin planets have suggested naming styles, but these are not mandatory!
2. What is their species?
Your character must be one of the eight races in the Astrophobia universe: Aalindari (think elves), Aalinhybrid (animal-hybrids), Androids, Astrals, Lillim (think tiefling), Terrans, Nairn (think dwarves), or Zlotaan (traditional 'aliens'). Please note if you are choosing a Lillim, they will have transformed into a Lillim while in cryo from the Lillim virus. It will be a new experience for your character!
3. What faction do they belong to?
As mentioned, they must belong to the SGS, FPU or BSC.
4. How did they end up in Llyr?
Your character cannot be from Llyr itself. Be creative! What was their career like with their faction before they were thawed? Why were they sent to Llyr? What were they expecting to find?

Choose Your Traits

Main articles: Standard Traits, Cybernetic Traits

Astrophobia uses the TinyD6 ruleset for roleplay, which is a minimalist and lightweight roleplaying system. As part of this system, your character starts with three traits: your species trait (found at the bottom of their wiki page) and two other traits of your choice. These can be either standard traits or cybernetic traits, but all races except Astrals and Androids are limited to 2 total cybernetic traits. Astrals are allowed 3, and Androids have no limit.

You are able to style the traits however you like: for instance, you might take Barfighter (which gives benefits with improvised weapons) but rather than your character being an alcoholic, they might just be resourceful or a tinkerer who can make use of whatever's around them.

Consider the following examples for starting trait combinations (you can make your own, these are just ideas!):

The Tracker

Don't worry. I'll find what happened to him.

(Combine with Android for that Nick Valentine vibe)

The Mechanic

I told you to bring this in before 20 thousand miles!

(Combine with Nairn for extra effectiveness!)

The Ne'er-do-well

Don't worry. I'll get us in.

(Combine with an origin on the planet Dortokas and starting in the Free People's Union for the 'arrested pickpocket' vibe!)

The Scientist

I'm close to a breakthrough, I know it!

(Combine with a Lillim if you like being something of a biological mystery yourself ...)

The Sharpshooter

I've got them in my sights.

(Combine with a LMSR Replika for the ruthless sniper vibe!)

The Netrunner

I wouldn't be talking if I were you. I know what you were browsing last night.

(Combine with an Astral or Android to transcend the limits of biology ...)

Step 3: Submit your Whitelist Application

Once you have reviewed the rules, basic lore, and created your character, it is time to submit a whitelist application. In the Astrophobia Discord, go to the whitelisting channel and create a new post in the forum. In this post, you should fill out the following form (you can copy + paste into Discord!):

``` You ``` **1. What is your Minecraft username(s)?** **2. How old are you? ** **3. What country / timezone do you stay in?** **4. Do you agree to follow all player guidelines listed in <#1164306659796066354>, both current and future iterations?** **5. Do you have any experience on other roleplaying communities?** **6. How did you find Astrophobia? If you were referred by another player, who?** ``` Your Character ``` **1. What is their name? ** **2. What species is your character?** **3. Why is your character in the Llyr system?**
Step 4: Review the Systems
There are a few key mechanics on Astrophobia that you need to know to get started, listed here below. Once you're settled in, we recommend you also look into the page on Workshops and Tools, the RPG System as a whole, and the commands for custom items.
Revival System Programme (RSP)
The Revival System Programme is a service offered by all three factions which can bring your character back to life if they meet an untimely demise.
Characters on Astrophobia have a chip installed at the top of their spine, which backs up their memories and personality construct on a daily basis. In the event of their death, the RSP chip will send a signal to your designated faction's Revival Facility, who, if possible, will retrieve the body. If the body is irretrievable, the facilities will grow a clone replacement.
Revivals are NOT automatic. You must contact your faction leader to process the revival.
If the body is retrieved, the revived character has their memories up to the moment of death. If the body is not retrieved (or the RSP chip is destroyed) and a clone is produced, then they have memories up until the day before their death.
Reviving a character costs 10 XP. If they do not have enough XP to revive, they can refund already owned character upgrades (such as Traits, additional HP, etc.) back into XP. You can never refund your starter traits, weapon proficiencies, or base HP.
Character Progression
Throughout your adventures on Astrophobia, you’ll earn experience points (XP). Contrary to other RPG systems, these are not used to level up. Instead, you spend XP points to upgrade your character. Your XP does not reset, and you have to keep track of how many XP you have spent.
9 XP: A permanent +1 HP increase (You can upgrade your health a maximum of 4 times).
12 XP: A new weapon category proficiency or weapon mastery.
15 XP: A new trait - You can have a maximum of 7 chosen traits (this includes the 2 you choose at character creation) and your species trait for a maximum of 8 traits total. Note: The first trait your purchase is 10 XP. Every trait after this costs the standard 15 XP.
5 XP: Swap out a previously chosen trait for a new trait.
Credits & Money
What are Credits?
Credits represent a reward for active players that they receive for actively participating on the server (1 credit per 10 minutes), voting (6 credits per vote), referring players to the server and interacting with our PlanetMinecraft page (25 credits each) as well as through occasional in-character methods. They are used to fund player housing, workshops, VR programs and a general currency to exchange between players for both in-character and out of character services.
Credits can be tracked using /money ingame!
What are Credits Actually (in-character)?
Your character does not receive funding from your OOC activities, so instead their credits are a wholly different thing. While SGS leadership upkeeps a fiat currency of credits for the purpose of maintaining mercantile activities, players can opt to have their credits represent all sorts of goods such as curated scrap, food rations/BSMC MRE packs, a service your character performs, catalogues or datachips with content from before the Silence, library access cards, limited edition trading cards, digi-autographed holograms of celebrity Bloodball players or perhaps a mix of any of those and conventional, standard issue credits.
Exchanging Credits
While exchanging OOC credits can give weight to an in-character interaction, not every exchange of credits needs to be done in an in-character fashion. Players are allowed to exchange Credits amongst them without in-character justification. If a player is offering a service or good and asking to be reimbursed somehow, they should clarify beforehand whether they're expecting a transaction of out of character credits or simply an emote in-character signifying payment.
